Glass in Glasshouses
Nature in Glass
Penny Riley-Smith My Work
Coming from a background in Art teaching, I moved to Nidderdale, North Yorkshire, and found inspiration in the rural surroundings. I have always worked with whatever materials suited the subject I was working on at the time, and when I bought a glass kiln, I discovered the expressive possibilities of kiln-fired and cast glass. My particular focus is on the rich birdlife in the area, the wildlife, rivers and wider landscape. I use glass and clay to explore the movement of air and water, fish and birds, and continue to be inspired by living and working in Nidderdale.
The range of my work expanded when I enrolled as a Glass and Ceramics student at the University of Sunderland, learning from skilled practitioners. An added benefit has been spending time exploring the beaches and cliffs of the North East coast.
My wanderlust has also taken me travelling with astronomers to see solar eclipses in unexpected deserts and oceans, travelling with textile artists to learn from the weavers, indigo dyers, block printers and potters of India, and coming back with my head full of rich colours and patterns which have found their way into my art.
